And here’s this week’s American Pastimes broadcast. It’s filled with bluegrass railroad songs, Butte County’s own Hawks & Eagles, a contemporary lament for California, and some instrumental lightning from David Grisman, Doc Watson and Byron Berline. For the academics among us there’s the evolution of “Dream of the Miner’s Child” from 1910 to 1971 and an appearance by the influential Texan “Ragtime” Henry Thomas. For poets and English majors there’s a great song about “Breakfast” and one plea to “Get Me Out of Jail.” And it wraps up with the best string bands playing lots of notes very quickly.
