On American Pastimes this week we feature a recording of a young, pre-fame Tony Rice jamming with his mentor and inspiration Clarence White, just months before White's untimely death in 1973. It's 20 minutes of bluegrass shredding. Before and after is the usual array of string bands, a set of "Stagger Lee" interpretations, a couple of sea songs, Kate Wolf compositions, and since this was originally broadcast on the eve of the Presidential Inauguration, there's politics and hard times, songs about making changes and leaving, and there's also some pretty upbeat, optimistic instrumentals as well.
